INSTRUCTION PHILOSOPHY
BACKYARDSWIMLESSONS.CA instructors take the approach of evaluating the participant's skills and abilities to design lesson plans according to the governing bodies' curriculum and BACKYARDSWIMLESSONS.CA professional development units. Our philosophy is not one-plan-fits-all; we tailor instruction based on the student's skill and level of ability, as well as physiological and emotional development.
We instruct skills included in the YMCA, Lifesaving Society and Red Cross Programs, which are infinitely useful for a solid foundation to swimming and aquatic exercise. BACKYARDSWIMLESSONS.CA complements this curriculum in alignment with the Canadian Long Term Athlete Development model, Infant Swimming Techniques and specialized stroke & fitness development instruction based on the BCRPA Aquatic Fitness Leader program and NCCP Swim Coach programs.
Registrants will have the opportunity to inform the instructor of the participant's skill level upon registration.

SMALL GROUP OR PRIVATE LESSONS?
Although one-on-one instruction may be what is best suited for the participant's needs, small groups can also be an option for those who like social time, and save a bit of money by splitting the cost of the lessons with another family.
PLEASE NOTE: The size of groups depends on the size of the pool.
Residential, condominium and townhouse complex pools need to accommodate a 2 meter physical distancing for MINIMUM 1 Instructor + 1 parent & tot, keeping in mind other swimmers in the pool.
For example: An above-ground pool in Squamish can accommodate for 1 instructor + 2 School Age participants, OR, 1 instructor + 2 parent & tot, OR, 1 instructor + 3 preschool (with teaching platform). Visit our FAQ page for more examples of how to maximize pool use and community participation.
